2002 Results
For the second two years of the FutureTruck Competition (2002-2003), Ford donated a 2002 Explorer to Penn State and the other 14 universities involved. Since the vehicle’s arrival in late November, the team has been hard at work converting the stock Explorer into a parallel hybrid electric vehicle, whereby the diesel engine and an AC induction motor will be working together to power the vehicle. The AC induction motor can be used as either a motor to aid the engine during transients or as a generator to recharge the 180 Volt battery pack.
