Penn State students competing in the EcoCAR 2 competition are getting relief from the frigid State College weather this week. Yesterday members of the Penn State Advanced Vehicle team traveled to sunny Austin, TX for the competition’s Winter Workshop hosted by one of the competition’s sponsors, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc.
At the workshop, students will learn additional requirements for the final competition as well as get one-on-one time with organizers and sponsor mentors. Team members will troubleshoot and get advice about issues they will face as they finalize their vehicle and transform the stock Malibu into a series plug-in hybrid electric.
PSU AVT members will hear presentations on sustainability in engineering, emissions and energy consumption and vehicle design from panels of industry professionals from sponsors such as General Motors, Argonne National Lab, the Department of Energy and the California Air Resources Board.
At the same time, communications managers from each team traveled to middle schools in Austin to teach seventh and eighth graders about hybrids and alternative fuels. Students also got the chance to design their own EcoCAR and take a look at the Chevrolet Malibu.
